‘Heart of the Home’ is conceived as a spatial anchor, responding to the materiality, palette, and architectural rhythm of the living room.
Blush and soft pink hues echo the warmth of the furnishings, while layered sage and muted aqua tones extend the room’s natural palette. Built through translucent layers, the composition integrates seamlessly while retaining depth and movement.
A concentrated field of blue in the upper left quadrant introduces contrast and asymmetry, offsetting the linear geometry of the fireplace and activating the wall plane with a subtle point of tension. Gold gilding acts as a reflective element, catching ambient and firelight to create a shifting luminosity that reinforces the fireplace as both a visual and emotional centre.
Scaled at 90cm x 120cm against a 140cm-wide fireplace, the piece is proportioned to sit centrally, allowing for balanced negative space that frames and elevates the composition.
With Mother’s Day approaching, the title carries personal significance. It reflects the role mothers play in shaping the feeling of a home — particularly within the living room. My first Mother’s Day without my dear Mum, the work holds her warmth and presence, quietly embedded within it’s layers as Mum’s really are the anchor and the ‘Heart of the Home.’
